About Nexus BioEd Solutions

A social enterprise, built on real teaching experience

Nexus BioEd Solutions is a UK bioscience education social enterprise. We provide personalised tutoring and mentoring across the biosciences, from GCSE through to postgraduate level. Earned revenue helps fund free and subsidised places for learners who face financial, social or educational barriers, through our Access and Opportunity Programme.

We are a growing team. This is an opportunity to join early, help shape how tutoring is delivered, and grow alongside the business.

The role

What you will do

Essential

What we're looking for

  • Strong subject knowledge in a bioscience subject, such as biology, chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology or biotechnology, at the level you'll be tutoring, GCSE through to postgraduate
  • Prior experience tutoring or teaching, in a school, university or private tutoring setting
  • A stable internet connection and a suitable online teaching setup
  • Clear, patient communication and the ability to explain complex ideas simply
  • Willingness to undergo an Enhanced DBS check, given that many of our students are under eighteen
  • For Oxbridge & Medical/Dental Application Coaching specifically, direct admissions experience is essential, not a bonus, personally going through Oxbridge or medical/dental school selection, sitting on an admissions panel, interviewing candidates, or supporting applicants with personal statements, BMAT or UCAT preparation
  • General subject tutoring experience alone does not qualify a tutor to deliver the Application Coaching tier, access to it is confirmed individually once you're onboarded
Desirable, not required

A bonus, not a barrier

  • A degree in a biosciences subject or a related field
  • A recognised teaching qualification or HEA fellowship (AFHEA, FHEA, SFHEA)
  • Experience tutoring international students, or students returning to education after a break
  • Experience with a specific exam board (AQA, Edexcel, OCR, CIE)

We welcome applicants at different stages of their careers, from experienced teachers and lecturers to strong graduates with a genuine passion for tutoring. Subject knowledge and teaching ability matter more to us than any single qualification.

Safeguarding

Every tutor is Enhanced DBS checked

Because a large proportion of our learners are under eighteen, an Enhanced DBS check is required before any tutor is confirmed and matched with students. If you already hold a current Enhanced DBS certificate on the Update Service, this can often be transferred, which may speed up your start date.

Pay and terms

What you'll take home

This is a freelance, self employed role. You will be responsible for your own tax and National Insurance. You are paid 80% of what the student pays for every completed session, which works out to £20 to £80 per hour depending on the level and type of session, from £20/hour for GCSE and A Level up to £80/hour for Oxbridge and Medical/Dental Application Coaching. The remaining 20% covers administrative costs and supports our work as a social venture, including free and subsidised places for learners from educationally disadvantaged backgrounds through our Access and Opportunity Programme.

Oxbridge and Medical/Dental Application Coaching is a specialist tier open only to tutors with direct admissions experience, such as having sat on an admissions panel, interviewed candidates, or gone through Oxbridge or medical school selection yourself. Access to this tier is agreed individually after onboarding, not guaranteed to every applicant.

You set your own weekly availability. There is no minimum hours commitment, though we ask for consistency with any student you take on for a full term. No unpaid trial sessions, no targets, no lesson observations.

How to apply

Send us your details

Please include a short CV or summary of your teaching and subject background, which levels and subjects you'd like to tutor, your general weekly availability, and whether you already hold a current Enhanced DBS certificate.

What happens next

Shortlisted applicants are invited to a short informal conversation, followed by DBS processing and a brief onboarding session before being matched with students.

No unpaid trials, no targets, no lesson observations, just a straightforward path from application to your first student.
